My Journey — and Why I Built ASTRA

Smiling man in black scrubs standing with arms crossed at Astra Test Prep.

Ask any dentist who's sat a bench exam what it's really like, and they won't start with the drilling. They'll tell you about the clock. About how something you've done a thousand times suddenly feels unfamiliar the moment it's being timed and judged.

I know that moment because I lived it.

My name is Dr. Rohit Basson. I earned my BDS in India, moved to California, and completed my MBA before chasing a harder goal: returning to dentistry in the United States. I was accepted into the ASPID program at the University of Oklahoma College of Dentistry, and in 2014, I earned my DDS.

That journey taught me something no textbook does: knowing dentistry and performing it under exam pressure are two different skills. You can understand a prep perfectly and still lose to the room — the silence, the clock, the sense that one attempt shapes your whole next chapter. Real confidence doesn't come from one more video or lecture. It comes from picking up the handpiece, working against the clock, checking your result honestly, and doing it again — until the unfamiliar starts to feel routine.

I've been practicing in California for over a decade now, and I still think often about the dentist I was during that Advanced Standing journey — and the ones walking it today, competing for the same limited seats, carrying the same quiet pressure.

That's why I built ASTRA.

Not another lecture to watch. A place to actually rehearse — hands-on simulation, real repetition, timed practice, honest feedback — until the bench exam stops being the unknown and starts being something you've already done a hundred times.

ASTRA came out of my journey. But it wasn't built for me — it was built for yours.

The goal was never just to practice a prep. It's to walk into that exam room already knowing you've been there before. If you're ready to start, take a look at the Prep Track I built.
